• What is degaussing?
    • Physical destruction of data storage devices technically does not remove data. It just make the devices(Tape or Hard Drive) unusable and data unreasonable to retrieve.

      Degaussing is the process of decreasing or eliminating a remnant magnetic field. During the degaussing process, a degasser which can produce a very high magnetic field which is measure in Oersted(Oe) renders the magnetic media completely unusable and permanently damages the firmware. The process will also destroy the write/read mechanism which make the storage media impossible to recover using any current recovery technology.

  • Software Wiping VS Degaussing
    • Software Data Wiping do not ensure 100% removal of data. Improper software wiping are at risk of media storage devices to contain stored remnant data which is inaccessible to the erasure technique.

      As such, degaussing is the process of destroying magnetic media storage devices which render the storage media completely unusable and all firmware is destroyed.

  • When is Degaussing Required?
    • Degaussing is the only way to comply with the federal requirement related to the sanitization and destruction of sensitive data like "Classified" or "Top Secret". In attempt to protect the country's classified information, several different federal agencies have standards and procedures that have been written on how to handle the destruction of sensitive data. Business also need to ensure their company information and personal data are destroyed before disposing off their end-of life I.T equipment. Degaussed follow by physical is the best process for protecting information from storage devices.

  • Why Should I Recycle?
    • Most businesses do not realize the impact on the environment when e-waste are irresponsibly disposal of, proper disposal include dismantle, shred, process and extract the constituent material that can be turn into new products. Some e-waste contain hazard material such as antimony, arsenic, lead and mercucy which is harmful to the human bodies and will cause major health issue when expose to the material.

      SYH focus on responsible disposal, ensure all e-waste collected is properly disposed, zero tolerance for landfill, ensure all equipment are recycle according to standard and compliance to government regulation. We always strive to do the job in the most environmentally sensible manner.

  • Why is Degaussing Necessary?
    • Physical destroying a data storage device alone technically does not remove data from a data storage device. It just make the device (Tape or hard drive) unusable and the data unreasonable to retrieve.

      This means that even though the item has passed through a shredder, it still has data on the little pieces that can be recovered. Many recycling and shredding firms claim that after shredding the data is not recoverable. This is a possibility, albeit unlikely, depending on where the shredded hard drive was sent, so degaussing is the best process to ensure 100% data destruction and zero data leakage.

  • Why Does it Cost Money to Recycle Electronics?
    • the materials used when manufacturing electronics products such as cadmium, arsenic, lead and mercury are unhealthy to the human borides. Improper disposal such as landfill will affect and pollute the environment. Wildlife, Plants, water and air, eventually human will suffer the consequences of irresponsible disposal of e-waste.

      Computer compnenents contains material such as dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs). cadmium, chromium, radioactive isotopes and mercury. These are hazardous material which will cause damage to the human bodies when not handled with proper methods. To properly break down hazardous electronics component to comply with government regulation and environmental law, e-cycling companies are resorted to charging fees for recycling electronics.

  • Can you Degauss Solid State Drives?
    • Solid State Drives (SSDs) do not store data magnetically, so they cannot be degaussed. The best practice for destroying information stored on solid state drives is through hard drives shredding. the particles size of 1/2" or smaller is needed to break through the small memory chips and securely obliterate the date.

  • What items are considered to be Electronics?
    • Practically anything with a plug we can consider that as an electronics. Examples are Computers, Computers peripherals, Telivisions Monitors, Telephones, Facsimiles, Copier Machinese, Audio and stereo equipment, DVD players, Video Cameras, VCRs, Cellular phones, wireless devices and video game consoles. Kitchen and household appliances can also be recycled. SYH accept all plug-in and equipment that use electricity.

  • What is the impact on the environment when e-waste are not dispose through proper methods?
    • Landfill, improper disposal of electronic waste could be harmful to the environment and it inhabitants, Electronic device may contain toxic and hazardous materials such as lead, silver, barium, cadmium and mercury when not handle and process properly will pollute the air, waste, soil, plant and wildlife.

  • What is a degasser?
    • Degausser is a machine that emit high-charged magnetic field to change the magnetic domain and destroy read/write device of a magnetic data storage devices. The process leaves the domain that stored information in random patterns with no preference to orientation, thereby rendering previous data unreadable and unrecoverable.

      Simply overwriting magnetic media does not completely erase data, only a degausser can remove data 100% and ensure confidential data is securely and completely erased.

  • What are the outcomes if we dispose electronic waste illegally?
    • Under section 20(1) of the Environmental Public Health Act, Cap 95 which states that " Any person found guilty under this sub-section, is liable to be fined an amount not exceeding $50,000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding 12 months or to both". For subsequent convictions, those found guilty can be fined up to $100,000, with a minumum jail term of not less than one month and not more than 12 months.

  • What is the Personal Data protection Act?
    • Organization today collect, use and disclose personal data about individuals = whether they are customers, employees or members, There individuals trust organizations like yours to use or disclose their personal data as it is intented for and to keep their personal data safe. Practicing good personal data management can increase business efficiency and effectiveness, boost customer confidence, and enhance your organization's public image.

      Organizations are required to comply with the entire Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (PDPA).

      SYH comply strictly to the PDPA as we are a data security company dealing with personal and corporate data

      The PDPA establishes a data protection law that comprises various rules governing the collection, use, disclosure and care of personal data. It recognizes both the rights of individuals to protect their personal data, including rights of access and correction, and the needs of organizations to collect, use or disclose personal data for legisimate and reasonable purposes.

  • Enforcement of the Data Protection Provisions
    • If the PDPC finds that an organization is in breach of any of the data protection provisions in the PDPA, it may give the organization such direction that it thinks appropriate to ensure compliance. These directions may include requiring the organization to :

      • Stop collecting, using or disclosing personal data in contravention of the Act;
      • Destroy personal data collected in contravention of the Act;
      • Provide access to or correct the personal data; and/or
      • Pay a financial penalty of an amount not exceeding $1 million.
